Consultation
Do I need a referral to see Dr Libby Anderson?
A referral is not strictly required to book an appointment. However, a referral is recommended to assist with appropriate triage of your condition, ensure coordinated care between your healthcare providers, and allow access to any Medicare rebates you may be eligible for.
Can I use a referral addressed to another surgeon?
Yes. Your referral does not need to be specifically addressed to Dr Libby Anderson. To access a Medicare rebate, the referral must include the provider number of the referring medical practitioner, as required under Medicare legislation.
What are the usual wait times for appointments and surgery?
Consultation appointments are typically available within three months, while surgery can usually be scheduled within four weeks of your consultation. Urgent referrals, particularly trauma-related cases, are prioritised and may be seen sooner following clinical triage.
How much does an appointment cost?
The initial consultation fee is $320, with follow-up consultations generally ranging from $120 to $180. The initial post-operative appointment is incorporated in the surgical fee and does not incur any additional cost.
What are the location and parking availability for appointments for Dr Libby Anderson?
Dr Libby Anderson sees patients at Brisbane Private Hospital and at Bayside Hand Therapy in Wynnum. Parking details for both locations are outlined below:
Brisbane Private Hospital
Dr Libby Anderson’s Brisbane Private Hospital location is at Level 3, 259 Wickham Terrace, Brisbane. From the lifts, turn right—the practice is located in the far right-hand corner. Paid parking is available beneath Brisbane Private Hospital (entry via Birley Street or Lilley Street, Spring Hill) and is billed at standard inner-city rates; however, this car park can fill quickly, particularly in the mornings, so we recommend allowing extra time or using one of the alternative paid parking stations along Wickham Terrace. Metered street parking is also available in surrounding streets. The practice is a short walk from both Central and Roma Street train stations.
Bayside Hand Therapy, Wynnum
Dr Libby Anderson’s Wynnum clinic is located at 89 Bay Terrace, Wynnum. Parking is available in the underground shopping centre car park.
What do I need to bring to my appointment?
Before your consultation, our friendly admin team will request your referral, details of any imaging, and relevant personal and medical information. Dr Anderson can usually access most Queensland radiology imaging electronically, so you generally won’t need to bring physical scans with you. Please come prepared to discuss your medical history and current symptoms to ensure a thorough assessment.
Does Dr Libby Anderson see WorkCover and third-party insurer patients, and what is required to book an appointment?
Yes. Dr Anderson accepts WorkCover and third-party insurer patients. To book an appointment, you must provide a valid WorkCover claim number, a referral from your medical practitioner, and confirmation that the consultation with Dr Anderson has been approved.
Surgery
Do you participate in Known Gap or Gap Cover schemes?
Dr Anderson does not routinely participate in Known Gap or Gap Cover schemes. Even if your health fund advises that Dr Anderson is registered for these arrangements and you hold top-level cover, an out-of-pocket expense will still apply.
Medicare rebates have not kept pace with the rising costs of providing high-quality surgical care, and private health insurance does not cover the full surgical fee. This approach allows Dr Anderson to maintain the high standard of care patients expect, which is not achievable under Gap Cover arrangements.
Do you see uninsured patients or third-party insurer Patients?
Yes. Dr Anderson sees uninsured patients as well as patients covered by third-party insurers.
How will I know what to do before my Procedure?
You will receive clear written instructions at least one week prior to your surgery date. These will include fasting requirements, admission time, and preparation guidelines.
If I require Surgery – who will the anaesthetist be?
Your anaesthetist will be confirmed once your surgery has been booked. At that time, your details will be forwarded to the anaesthetic team, who will contact you directly by email with a quote.
What should I bring on the day of my Procedure?
On the day of your surgery, please bring your admission paperwork, photo identification, Medicare card, and private health fund details if applicable. If your surgery is covered by a third party or insurer, please also bring those details. Additionally, it’s important to bring a list of your current medications to ensure your care team has all the necessary information.
Is hand and wrist surgery usually day surgery?
Many hand and wrist procedures can be performed as day surgery. Dr Anderson will discuss whether this applies to your case during your consultation and will review it again when booking your surgery.
Will I need someone to take me home after my procedure?
Yes. For your safety and in line with hospital policy, a responsible adult must collect you from the hospital, drive you home, and stay with you overnight following your surgery and anaesthetic. You will not be able to drive yourself, as anaesthetic can leave you feeling groggy and affect your coordination and judgement, even if you feel capable. Having someone stay with you for the first 24 hours is recommended to monitor your recovery.
Post Procedure – Hand Therapy
Most patients will require hand therapy as part of their recovery, and we have an in-house hand therapist who supports Dr Anderson. Sessions typically cost approximately $132–$223 depending on duration, with additional costs for consumables such as dressings, splints, and exercise equipment billed separately. Hand therapy is generally claimable through private health insurance “extras” cover, but not Medicare.
If your condition has been present for six months or longer, you may be eligible for Medicare rebates under a Chronic Disease Management (Care) Plan, which must be arranged by your GP, as specialists cannot initiate these plans. Dr Anderson cannot refer patients to Medicare-funded hand therapy; referrals must come from your GP. In some cases, you may see an occupational hand therapist during your appointment for custom splinting or rehabilitation, with therapy consultations and consumables billed separately. Fees and billing arrangements may differ for DVA and WorkCover patients, and approved insurers can be billed directly when a valid claim number is provided.
When is my post-procedure appointment with Dr Libby Anderson?
You will have a post-operative review with Dr Libby Anderson within 2 to 6 weeks after surgery, scheduled in conjunction with your hand therapist. At this appointment, Dr Anderson will review your recovery and progress. If any issues or complications arise before then, we will contact you promptly. Your post-op care paperwork provided at your time of discharge from hospital after your surgery will include this appointment along with your rehabilitation sessions.
Who can I reach out to after my procedure if I have concerns?
For any questions or concerns during weekdays (Monday to Friday), please call our office at 07 3835 6450. If your concern arises after hours or on the weekend, contact your General Practitioner, or go directly to the nearest emergency department in the case of an emergency.
Are there any medications I need to stop before my procedure?
Certain medications may need to be paused before and after your procedure, but this should only be done under the guidance of the Specialist or GP who prescribed them. In hand and wrist surgery there is rarely a need to stop any medications, including blood thinners, which Dr Anderson routinely continues. Related to your anaesthetic, some diabetes medications or weight-loss drugs (GLP-1 receptor agonists eg Ozempic , Muonjaro or Wegovy) may need to be ceased. When your procedure is being scheduled, our team will review your medical history and provide clear instructions on any medications that should be stopped or adjusted beforehand. Please ensure you provide a full and accurate medication history to help us give the safest and most appropriate advice.
